Strength Training on TRT: How Men Get the Most Out of Testosterone Therapy
Short answer: TRT works best when it's paired with consistent strength training, enough protein and good sleep. Testosterone makes it easier to build muscle, but it doesn't build it for you. Men who lift with a plan get far more out of TRT than men who rely on the prescription alone.
I coach men in Utah and online across the US who are on TRT, and the biggest mistake I see is treating it as the whole plan. Here's how to train so your therapy actually shows up in the mirror and in your strength.
Does TRT build muscle on its own?
Testosterone supports muscle growth, but research and real-world experience both point the same way: the biggest gains come when TRT is combined with resistance training. Without a training stimulus, your body has little reason to build new muscle, even with healthy testosterone levels.
How should men on TRT train?
Lift 3 to 4 times per week. Build each session around compound lifts: squats, deadlifts or hinges, presses, rows and pull-ups.
Progress steadily. Add a little weight or a rep each week. Progressive overload is what turns better hormones into more muscle.
Don't skip conditioning. Two short sessions a week of intervals or brisk incline walking support heart health, which matters for men on TRT.
Respect your joints. Strength can climb faster than your tendons adapt. Warm up well, control your reps and build mobility into every week.
Our 3x3 Strength Method covers all of this in short, efficient sessions, with home, gym and travel versions in the XFit app.
What should men on TRT eat?
Enough protein. Spread it across your meals so your body has what it needs to build muscle.
Steady blood sugar. Our GPS Nutrition System has you eat Greens, then Proteins, then Starches, which helps keep energy and appetite steady.
Limited alcohol. Alcohol works against recovery, sleep and body composition.
What else affects TRT results?
Sleep. Seven to nine hours supports recovery and energy.
Body fat. Losing excess fat often improves how you feel on therapy. Ask your doctor how your body composition affects your treatment.
Regular bloodwork. Your doctor should monitor your labs. Your coach handles training and nutrition; your doctor handles the medication.
Can I build muscle on TRT after 40?
Yes. Many of our clients are in their 40s, 50s and beyond. Recovery may take a little longer, so smart programming and consistency matter more than workout length or intensity.
